Year 6
Welcome to Year 6!
We are very proud of our school and take pride in being role models to the younger children. We have thoroughly enjoyed our learning journey through the Calcot Schools but remain determined to give our best effort and fulfil our dreams in the future.
We have three classes and our teachers are Mrs Settle, Miss Hughes and Ms Chughtai. To support us further, we have Mrs Wasley and Miss Bellanti.
We are encouraged to be independent and resilient learners, using every opportunity to deepen our understanding and increase our confidence as learners. Across the full range of curriculum subjects, we enjoy working collaboratively with our peers as well as developing our own individual skills.
Homework supports our learning in the classroom and we are encouraged to engage with this, as good preparation for secondary school. We run an optional homework club on a Monday lunchtime so that we do not fall behind with our work.
An average day in Year 6 looks like:
-
Register in class - we will have morning tasks to complete as soon as we come in, to get our brains awake!
-
Assembly in class or with the rest of the school
-
English in the morning, before break.
-
Maths in the morning, after break.
-
After lunch, there are usually two lessons. We cover a range of subjects including Geography, History, French, RE, PSHE, Art, Design & Technology, PE, Science, Computing and Music.
We visit the library every week, on a Thursday.
PE lessons are on a Wednesday and Friday. We need to wear our full PE kit. We should bring our kit to change into for the afternoon.
On Wednesdays, the Junior School opens early to allow us to practise our times tables, as a key element in our overall maths confidence.
Key information for Year 6
SATS
In May, most pupils in Year 6 will take the key stage 2 (KS2) national curriculum tests – commonly known as SATs.
These tests, alongside teacher assessment of English writing and science, are used to measure school performance and to make sure individual pupils have the support that they need as they move into secondary school.
We do not want any children (or parents) to feel worried about the SATs. We will work with your child to prepare them for these assessments. We try to make the week fun for the children - we offer a daily pre-SATs breakfast and we finish the week with the famous Year 6 water-fight, which is a firm favourite with the children!
These are two helpful links about SATs, which are aimed at parents.
